About this site
Monroe in Focus covers the local government of Monroe Township, a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey: the Town Council, the Board of Education, the Planning Board and the Zoning Board. The name is the promise: every meeting, every decision, in focus. We are not there yet, and our Coverage page shows exactly what we have and haven't covered. It exists for one reason: the township and school district post full video of their meetings, and those meetings routinely run two hours or more, full of procedural language, ordinance numbers, and inside references that assume you already know the backstory. Most people don't have two hours, and most people didn't grow up following zoning law. This site tries to close that gap.
How stories are made
Each story starts from the township's own official meeting recording — usually posted to its YouTube channel a day or two after the meeting. The full transcript is reviewed and condensed into plain language, with technical terms (ordinance, resolution, bond, zoning, Superfund site, and so on) explained the first time they come up rather than assumed. Nothing is added that wasn't said at the meeting; where a speaker made a claim that hasn't been independently verified — for example, a personal recollection about decades-old events — the story says so explicitly.
What this site is not
This is not an official publication of Monroe Township, Middlesex County, or any government body, and it has no connection to any of them. It is not a substitute for the township's official minutes, which are the legal record of what a council did. If you need to rely on something — a vote outcome, a legal deadline, a dollar figure — verify it against the official meeting video or contact the Monroe Township Clerk's office directly.
Corrections
Mistakes happen, especially when condensing two-hour meetings down to a few minutes of reading. If something here is wrong or misleading, please open an issue on this site's GitHub repository so it can be fixed.
